Stabat Mater Dolorosa – Drake

Below is a rendering of the Stabat Mater setting I composed when I was 16. Until now, I have not published it publicly, partly due to some oddities in the voice leading (yes, there are some tritone jumps in the harmonizing voices) and it being my first basically successful attempt at sacred music composition. However, I found a live recording of it from 2013, and it is singable in spite of those things.

I’ve decided not to edit the score and am releasing the setting as is, under Creative Commons, as marked. A free PDF may be downloaded at the bottom of the post.

Stabat Mater, sung by the Mater Dei Choir, 2013. It sounds like the choir sang it during Communion, based on all of the foot traffic in the background. I think I can hear myself singing with the Basses. Kimberly Walters, directing, interpreted the piece nicely.

I found this among the recordings in the parish’s Choral Ensemble Media Library.

Trivia

I could not remember for certain exactly when I composed this. I knew it was around the 1999-2000 time frame, however, I couldn’t peg the date down further. I’ve gone through many computers and versions of Finale since then, so I thought I might have lost that information for good.

Then it occurred to me to check the file properties stored by Finale itself, and I found the original creation date of the file! I would have completed the score after this, but probably within only a few months at most.
