It’s that time of the year when our skin tends to dry out and become chapped. Winter weather is particularly hard on hands, feet, and lips. This post is a DIY (do-it-yourself) tutorial on how to make your own natural lip balm. Making homemade lip balm is fun and easy – and you reap all the benefits of knowing exactly where the ingredients came from and feeling good about the fact that your lip balm is natural and chemical-free!
This wintry-themed lip balm recipe comes from a recipe on Mountain Rose Herbs website.
Peppermint Cocoa Lip Balm: A refreshing, cooling, and nourishing lip balm with cocoa butter and peppermint for that quintessential fusion of chocolate and mint.
Ingredients:
- 1T Cocoa butter
- 2T Sweet Almond oil
- 1T Avocado oil
- 1T plus 1t beeswax
- 12-15 drops Peppermint essential oil
- A few drops of vitamin E oil (optional but recommended)
Directions:
Coarsely chop the beeswax. Place beeswax, butter, and oils in a small pot or glass pyrex measuring cup. Gently heat these ingredients in the top of a double boiler. Once the ingredients are melted, remove from the stove and add essential oil and vitamin E oil. Immediately pour the mixture into lip balm containers (tubes or jars). Allow the mixture to cool completely before placing caps on the containers. Now that the lip balm is finished, you can add labels, ribbon, twine, or other decorative elements to the containers. Recipe makes approx. 1.5oz of lip balm (enough to fill 10 lip balm tubes).
Make some for you and your family, but don’t forget to make an extra batch or two – homemade lip balm makes a great stocking stuffer or Christmas gift!
