SSA Version (Added 2023-07-29)
Discussion
Originally, the first verse of the hymn was “Intende qui regis Israel,” but for some reason, it was dropped many centuries ago. From Psalm 79, this dropped verse is also represented in the introit and tract for Ember Saturday in Advent.
For this setting of Veni Redemptor Gentium, I decided to turn the first verse into a refrain sung by a chorus after each of the remaining verses, with the exception of the final verse ending with “Amen” — although something in me wants to repeat it even after “Amen”, as the schola repeats “dulce lignum” at the end of Crux Fidelis. I intend measures 17 – 20 to be dramatic, with a pronounced increase in volume and marcato on “qui regis Israel.”
